●The KiHa 100 series diesel railcar was introduced in 1990 to replace older models such as the KiHa 20 and KiHa 45 series.
Four prototype units were built initially, followed in 1991 by four improved mass-production units (the first batch); later that same year, a second batch featuring modifications such as a redesigned pilot (skirt) appeared.
These trains operated primarily on the Ofunato, Kitakami, Yamada, Kamaishi, and Ominato lines. However, due to replacement by the KiHa 110 series, they were retired from the Ofunato Line following the timetable revision in March 2025, with the retirement of the prototype and first-batch units proceeding alongside this transition.
In 2024, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Kitakami Line, unit KiHa 100-2 was repainted in a retro livery featuring the black front-end design used when the series first debuted; it operated on the Kitakami and Ofunato lines until March 2025.
