Information
The 12 series passenger cars, which debuted in 1969 for use on fluctuating demand and express services, began to become surplus in the 1980s. As a result, they were converted into "joyful trains," such as parlor cars and Western-style cars, in an effort to further increase revenue in various regions. A six-car parlor car set converted by the Shizuoka Railway Bureau in 1982 was named "Ikoi" and, being based in Numazu, became affectionately known among fans as "Numa-za," meaning "Numazu's parlor car." While the exterior retained much of the original 12 series image, including the paint scheme, and was not converted into an observation car, the interior was completely renovated into a purely Japanese-style parlor car with tatami flooring. Each car was given a nickname based on the name of a river in the Chubu region. After the privatization of Japanese National Railways, they were inherited by JR Central and were seen operating alongside various locomotives, but were retired in March 1997. The Fukuchiyama Railway Bureau also had a passenger car named "Ikoi," but it was a different vehicle from this train set.
