information
In the 1960s, many steam locomotives still remained on the Japanese National Railways (JNR) lines, and various diesel locomotives were developed to replace them. The DE10 diesel locomotive was developed in 1966 to replace medium-sized locomotives used for shunting and secondary lines, such as the 9600, C11, and C58. It adopted a unique AAA-B five-axle arrangement to ensure adhesion performance while keeping the axle load down to 13 tons and to reduce lateral pressure on curves. It was equipped with a single DML61ZA engine, the same as the DD51, and had a distinctive appearance with a bonnet that extended long on one side. The driver's cab was positioned laterally, taking shunting into consideration. As a general-purpose locomotive that matched the conditions of Japanese railway lines, 708 DE10s were manufactured by 1978, and many variations exist, including the DE11 specialized for shunting, the DE15 for snow removal, and types independently introduced by private railways. In the 2000s, some of JR Freight's DE10s became dedicated shunting locomotives, and were repainted to distinguish them from those used on main lines. DE10-1583 was manufactured in 1973 and assigned to the Nogata locomotive depot. It was subsequently used consistently within Kyushu, including in Moji and Kashii. From the 2000s, it was designated as a shunting locomotive for the Moji locomotive depot, repainted in a reddish-purple color, and used within the depot until 2016.
