Information
The KiHa 54-500 series, which operates on JR Hokkaido, is a 21-meter-long, double-ended general-purpose diesel railcar designed for extremely cold climates. Between 2003 and 2005, the train underwent equipment modernization work, the most notable external feature being the replacement of the bogies from the conventional DT22 to the bolsterless N-DT54. In addition to the equipment modernization work, the front typhoon horn was removed to make way for the installation of a deer whistle.
