JR D51-498 Orient Express '88
Information
●D51 498, manufactured in 1940, operated throughout Honshu before being decommissioned in 1972 and preserved in front of Gokan Station on the Joetsu Line. Sixteen years later, in November 1988, it was restored to working order by JR East, resuming service to its former glory. Its first train pulled by this restored locomotive was the much-talked-about "Orient Express '88," which was visiting Japan at the time. For the final domestic journey, it was pulled in a double-headed configuration, leading the EF58 61 locomotive from Ueno Station to Omiya Station.
Since then, it has mainly been used to pull event trains such as the "SL Minakami" on the Joetsu Line, and continues to operate as one of JR East's flagship locomotives.
