●In 1959, with the electrification of the Tohoku Main Line north of Kuroiso, three prototype ED71 locomotives with different specifications based on the ED70 appeared. Based on the test results, 41 first-generation mass-produced units were introduced the following year over two years, and 11 second-generation mass-produced units were introduced over two years starting in 1962, with a total of 55 units assigned to the Fukushima locomotive depot. They played an active role as locomotives for pulling passenger and freight trains on the AC electrified section from Kuroiso to the suburbs of Sendai, and laid the foundation for the subsequent development of AC electric locomotives.When the ED75 was introduced in 1965 for electrification north of Sendai, the ED71s were gradually replaced, starting with high-speed trains, but they continued to operate south of the suburbs of Sendai.In their final years, some units were fitted with two-lamp sealed-beam headlights, but all units were withdrawn from service in 1982.
