Information
●The 883 series debuted in 1995 with the aim of speeding up and improving service on the Nippo Main Line. It was JR Kyushu's first tilting train and Japan's first AC tilting train for commercial use. Initially, five 7-car sets and three 5-car sets were manufactured, and a distinctive feature is that the design of the front panel was changed depending on the year of manufacture. The 5-car sets were distinguished by the different colors of the front: silver, yellow, and dark blue. After 2005, a renewal project was carried out, and the current metallic blue exterior was standardized. Furthermore, in 2008, the 5-car sets were converted to 7-car sets, so all sets are now 7-car sets. In 2025, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of its debut, the first set (AO-1) was given a commemorative wrapping and is currently in operation for a limited time until the end of the year.
