Information
The EF81 was introduced in 1968 as a dual-voltage AC/DC locomotive capable of operating on the Japan Sea Main Line, which has three different electrified sections. It has the capability to pull both passenger and freight trains, and some of these locomotives are still in active service today. In 1999, coinciding with the start of service for the sleeper express "Cassiopeia," three locomotives, numbers 79, 89, and 92, were repainted in the Cassiopeia livery, and later locomotive number 99 also received the same paint job. In addition to the "Cassiopeia," it was also used to pull trains such as the "Hokutosei," "Elm," and "Yume Kukan," and continued to operate until the introduction of its successor, the EF510, in June 2010.
