Information
Twenty-eight GS-4 locomotives were produced between 1941 and 1942 during World War II. The "G" in GS stands for "Golden State" (a nickname for California), and the "S" stands for "General Service." There were locomotives numbered GS-1 through GS-6, with the GS-4 being the fourth generation.

These locomotives played a vital role in pulling named trains, such as the Southern Pacific Railroad's "Morning Daylight," a daytime express train on the West Coast touted as "the most beautiful train in the world." While capable of reaching a top speed of 177 km/h, its maximum speed was limited to 121 km/h, resulting in an average speed of 113 km/h for the 18-car Daylight train.

During the war and for several years immediately following, some locomotives were painted black, but by 1948, all were repainted in the Daylight livery.

In their later years, most of the locomotives were repainted black and continued to operate, pulling freight trains and other heavy loads.

All locomotives were retired after their final run in 1958.
