information
The Shuttle Maihama was a train that debuted on March 10, 1990, coinciding with the extension of the Keiyo Line from Shin-Kiba to Tokyo. One three-car train was modified from the 165 series of the Makuhari Train Depot with the aim of stimulating transportation demand to the large theme park adjacent to Maihama Station on the Keiyo Line. The exterior was completely revamped, with the side windows replaced with fixed windows, the headlights and taillights changed to square combination lights, and a large sun motif illustration painted on the center of the side of the intermediate cars, giving it a striking appearance. The seating arrangement was varied, with some cars (Kuha 165-194) having all seats facing sideways towards the sea relative to the direction of travel, and others (Moha 164-852) having seats facing sideways only in the central part of the car body. The train mainly operated as a shuttle service between Nishi-Funabashi, Maihama, and Tokyo, and as it was treated as a rapid train, all cars were operated as ordinary passenger cars. Due to the relatively short travel time, all seats were foldable and upholstered in vinyl leather. Toilets and washrooms were removed from the train except for one, and seats were placed in their place. In December 1995, it was transferred to the Kaminumata Depot, its nickname was changed to "Alpha," and in July of the following year, its exterior paint scheme was changed to a blue-based design. During the summer, it was often seen in the Tokyo metropolitan area, mainly on various group charter trains. During the winter, it was mainly used for ski excursions in the Joetsu area, but it was retired in May 2001.
