●The 681 series is JR West's first limited express train, introduced in 1992 as a successor to the 485 series and other trains used for limited express services connecting the Kansai/Tokai region with the Hokuriku region. The prototype was a 9-car through-train, but the mass-produced version was divided into 6-car and 3-car sets, allowing for splitting and merging. Depending on the era and the train, the trains have undergone changes in direction and formation, and the remaining sets used for adding to the "Thunderbird" service have been modified and refreshed, including the removal of the conductor's compartment and the enlargement of some doors for barrier-free access, and have the same color scheme as the refurbished 683 series.
