Information
●The KiHa 40 series was a general-purpose diesel railcar developed to replace the aging KiHa 10 series, and it debuted in 1977.

Various types and sub-series models were manufactured, including single-cab and double-cab versions capable of single-unit operation, as well as versions for cold and warm climates, and versions with or without toilets. A total of 888 units were operated mainly on non-electrified lines throughout Japan.

Around 1980, they were stationed at the then Hakodate Depot and operated on the Hakodate Main Line, Esashi Line, Matsumae Line, and Setana Line. While their service area was reduced due to line closures and transfers to third-sector companies, the KiHa 40 series in Hakodate supported transportation until the timetable revision on March 15, 2025, which marked the end of their last remaining regular service on the Hakodate Main Line between Hakodate and Oshamanbe.

On the final day of operation, the first southbound train, 5881D from Hakodate to Mori, which was also the only three-car train in the Hakodate area, was comprised of three cars that had served in Hakodate for many years: car 1806 in JR Hokkaido colors, car 1801 with its distinctive modified skirt, and car 1809, known as "Donan Umi no Megumi" (Bounty of the Sea of South Hokkaido).

After the end of KiHa 40 series operations in the Hakodate area, car 1809, known as "Donan Umi no Megumi," was transferred to the Tomakomai Depot and is now operating on the Hidaka Main Line.
