JR ED79-0 (vehicle equipped with a single-arm pantograph)
Information
●The ED79 locomotives were introduced in 1988 for use in the Seikan Tunnel, which opened that year. They were modified versions of the ED75-700 series to handle the tunnel's continuous gradients and higher speeds, and were equipped with safety devices specifically for the Seikan Tunnel.
Later, the side inspection hatches were sealed, and from 2010, the pantograph on the No. 2 end was replaced with a single-arm type.
They supported transportation on the Tsugaru Strait Line until the discontinuation of the "Hamanasu" and "Cassiopeia" services following the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen in March 2016, before all units were retired.
