Older national trains were used on the Ome Line until 1978, and along with the 72 and 73 series, the KuMoHa 40 series remained in service until the very end.
In the 1960s, the old national trains on the Ome Line mainly consisted of two-car formations of KuMoHa + KuHa, or formations consisting of two of these coupled together, but after the introduction of MoHa 72 and SaHa 78 around 1972, the majority of formations became four-car formations of KuMoHa 73 + SaHa 78 + MoHa 72 + KuHa 79.
