Information
The Metropolitan Intercity Railway (Tsukuba Express) opened on August 24, 2005, as a new urban express line in the northeastern Tokyo metropolitan area. It connects Akihabara and Tsukuba (58.3 km) in as little as 45 minutes, boasting a top speed of 130 km/h. The line's electrification system differs at Moriya Station, with the Akihabara side running 1500 V DC and the Tsukuba side running 20,000 V AC. The TX-1000 series is a DC-only train used exclusively for trains between Akihabara and Moriya, and its license plates and other nameplates feature a dark blue background color. Each six-car train, consisting of three cars and three trains, features long seats to accommodate commuter demand. Fourteen trains have been introduced, and they are primarily used for local trains. The TX-2000 series is an AC/DC train used for direct trains beyond Moriya, and its license plates and other nameplates feature a scarlet background color. The interior of the six-car train, consisting of 4M2T, originally featured semi-cross seats in cars 3 and 4 to accommodate long-distance commuters, but these have been replaced with long seats in recent years. Initially, 16 six-car trains were introduced, and they are mainly used for rapid and limited express trains. In 2008, four more six-car trains were added to accommodate the increase in passenger numbers. An external feature of the additional cars is the scarlet stripe attached to the front and under the side windows.
