From No. 1033 onwards, the EF64-1000 were no longer equipped with electric heating units as they were designed to tow freight trains, and some jumper plugs and roof-mounted exhaust vents were removed.
Of these, the final additional cars, No. 1051 to No. 1053, were assigned to Nagaoka Rolling Stock Depot at the time of JNR privatization and were used to tow sleeping cars and other trains, but No. 1052 and No. 1053 were transferred to Takasaki Rolling Stock Depot, with No. 1053 remaining in service until November 2024.
