The Shinetsu Main Line's section between Yokokawa and Karuizawa (Usui Pass) features a steep gradient of 66.7‰ (per mille), and a special system known as the Abt system was used, in which a pinion gear was installed in the center of the car body, engaging with a rack rail in the center of the track on which the train was running. The ED42 was manufactured in 1934 to replace the previous ED40 and other trains. In its basic operation, a set of four cars was connected, with three cars on the Yokokawa side and one car on the Karuizawa side, with passenger cars sandwiched between them. Toward the end of its life, the ED42 was sometimes paired with the Kiha 82 series and Kiha 57 series, but in 1963 the Abt system was abolished and operation was switched to conventional adhesion operation, with all locomotives being retired and replaced by the successor EF62 and EF63.
