JNR Orohane 10-4 (Blue No. 15/Yonago Passenger and Freight Depot)

Information
The 10 series passenger cars, which took the world by storm with their revolutionary lightweight structure, have spawned various derivative series since the 1960s. The Narohane 10 was introduced in 1958 as a combined 2nd/3rd class sleeping car for the Chuo and Shinetsu lines, where the traction constant on mountainous lines was limited and there was not as much demand for 2nd class sleeping cars as on main lines. Unusually for a JNR passenger car, it had an access platform in the center of the car body, with 2nd and 3rd class compartments at the front and rear, and this, combined with the elegant design of the 10 series passenger cars, attracted many fans. In the 1960s, the cars were renamed 1st/2nd class sleeping cars as they were converted to a 2nd class class, and the car body colour was changed to blue No. 15. From 1964 onwards, the cars were renamed Ohane 10 due to the increased weight caused by the introduction of air conditioning in the 1st class compartments. Groups 1 to 5, which had been active in the Shinetsu region, were taken out of service with the "Yon Santo" revision, but the following year, the four cars other than group 2 were selected for use on the San'in Main Line express "Sanbe" and transferred to Takeshita Passenger Car Depot, and the following year they were transferred again to Yonago Passenger and Freight Depot and also used on the "Izumo" service. Ohane 10-4 was used as a spare car and was retired in 1973 without being fitted with air conditioning in all compartments.
