information
●In the late 1960s, the peak of the steam locomotive boom was the "Niseko" express train, connecting Hakodate and Sapporo. The "Niseko," known as the "Yon Santou" express train, debuted in October 1968, a nationwide timetable revision. It ran on the Hakodate Main Line, passing through Oshamanbe and on to Otaru, Sapporo, and Asahikawa. It supported the large flow of people between Honshu and Hokkaido, as well as the distribution of mail and small parcels, via the Seikan Ferry. In particular, the Hakodate Main Line between Otaru and Oshamanbe, commonly known as the "Yama Line," featured a large C62 steam locomotive coupled to a helper locomotive at the front, a sight that marked the peak of the steam locomotive boom. After the farewell triple-headed C62 on September 15, 1971, the train was replaced by a double-headed DD51 locomotive.
