information
The Kiha 183-1000 series is a limited express diesel railcar introduced by JR Kyushu in 1988. Based on the design of the JNR Kiha 183-500 series, the front of the train features a raised driver's cab on the second floor, a streamlined observation room on the first floor, a buffet, and entertainment facilities for children, making it ideal for tourist express trains from the start. The front also features a double-headed coupler and a train control signal conversion device, allowing it to be coupled with a 485 series electric train for coordinated operation. The Kiha 71 series "Yufuin no Mori," introduced as a highlight for access to Yufuin, famous for its hot springs, was a huge hit, and as further increases in transport capacity were required, the Kiha 183-1000 series, which had ceased operation as the "Holland Village Express," was converted into the "Yufuin no Mori II" train running between Hakata, Yufuin, and Oita in 1992. To accommodate this, compartments were installed, the observation room was made into a free space, and the livery was changed to match that of the Kiha 71 series. When the new Kiha 72 series "Yufuin no Mori III" was introduced in 1999, the Kiha 183 series ceased operation as part of the "Yufuin no Mori" series, and since then the livery, interior, and running route have been changed many times, and as of 2025 it runs between Kumamoto, Aso, and Miyaji as the "Asoboi!" limited express train.
