information
The Kiha 183 series 1000s were introduced in 1988 for the "Holland Village Limited Express" service, painted in the red, white, and blue colors of the Dutch flag. They feature an observation deck at the front and a driver's seat on the second floor. The vehicle's performance is similar to that of the Kiha 183 (500s) for Hokkaido, and, taking into account operational conditions, they are capable of cooperative driving with the 485 series limited express trains. In 1992, the livery was changed and the interior facilities were refurbished to accommodate an increase in the frequency of the "Yufuin no Mori" limited express on the Kyudai Main Line. In 1999, the livery was restored to red, white, and blue for the newly established "Siebold" limited express on the Omura Line. In 2004, the trains returned to the Kyudai Main Line as the "Yufu DX" in an ancient lacquer color, and from 2008, the livery was changed to golden yellow. Since June 2011, it has been used for the Toyohashi Main Line's limited express "Asoboy!", marking its sixth specification change. Its exterior has been completely redesigned with a two-tone black and white base with yellow accents, and the train has a fresh and comical style with numerous images of the black dog "Kuro-chan (Aso Kuroemon)" displayed inside and outside the car. In addition to the "Panorama Seat" observation room in the front car, the train is also equipped with a variety of attractive customer service facilities, including the world's first parent-child seat, the "White Kuro-chan Seat," and a "Kuro Cafe" where beverages and other items can be served. As of 2025, the train is still operating to great acclaim.
