Basic 6 cars + 6 Cars Add-on
12 Cars Set
Information
The Hokutosei was a sleeper express train that debuted in 1988 with the opening of the Seikan Tunnel, running between Ueno and Sapporo, and boasted luxurious amenities such as private compartments and a lounge car.
In March 2008, when the Hokutosei's service was reduced to one round trip per day, the train's composition was changed so that cars 1-6 were owned by JR Hokkaido, and cars 7-11 and the power car were owned by JR East.
From February 2011, due to the need to secure reserve cars, car 2 was changed to include open-berth sleeping compartments, and the distinctive Ohanev 24-500 type car was primarily used.
With the timetable revision in March 2015, regular service of the Hokutosei ended, and subsequent operation as a temporary train until August was carried out using only JR East-owned cars, so the mixed train composition was only in service until that time.
