The EF510-500 series is an AC/DC electric locomotive that was introduced in 2009 with the aim of replacing the EF81 series locomotives of JR East's Tabata Depot, which were used to haul the "Hokutosei" and "Cassiopeia" sleeper limited express trains and freight trains.
A total of 15 locomotives were produced: 13 in the "Hokutosei" livery, featuring a blue body with gold stripes and shooting stars on the sides, and 2 in the "Cassiopeia" livery, featuring a silver body with five-colored shooting stars on the sides. They began operation in 2010, but with the discontinuation of the regular services of the "Hokutosei" and "Cassiopeia" trains, all of them were transferred to JR Freight by 2016.
