Information
The Nankai 50000 series "Rapi:t" limited express train was introduced for airport access when Kansai International Airport opened in September 1994. It debuted with an unprecedented and bold design, featuring a unique aircraft-inspired design with a three-dimensional, curved sphere-like front and oval side windows, as well as a deep Rapi:t Blue (Blue Mica) body paint. Even now, more than 30 years later, it remains one of the most popular trains in Japan. The two cars of the six-car train facing Namba feature "Super Seats" with a 1+2 seating arrangement, and the third car is equipped with a luggage compartment for transporting checked baggage. The main controller uses GTO-VVVF inverter control, and with a top speed of 120km/h, it connects Namba and Kansai Airport in as little as 29 minutes. Renewal work has been carried out in stages since 2014, with changes to the exterior including the replacement of the main control unit with an IGBT-VVVF inverter unit, the auxiliary power supply unit, and the side displays with full-color LEDs that support multilingual display. In 2021, the bogie frames of the electric cars were replaced with ones similar to those of the 8300 series, changing the impression. As of 2025, six six-car trains are still in service as "Rapi:t Alpha" and "Rapi:t Beta," and they are beloved by many fans both in Japan and overseas as the image leaders of Nankai Electric Railway in both name and reality.
