information
The DF90 is a diesel-electric locomotive manufactured by Hitachi in 1956. Its front features the popular two-panel Shonan-style windows, while its side features three square windows, resembling the EF58. Its unique cream and red paint scheme was a refreshing departure from the original. Its engine, manufactured by the German company MAN, shares many similarities with the DF40(91), but differs in its rated output of 1650 PS. After various tests, the locomotive entered service in June 1957, at which point it was repainted burgundy. In 1958, the Asian Railway Leaders Conference (A.R.C.) held a railway exhibition at the Oi Works (now the Tokyo General Rolling Stock Center), where the DF90 was exhibited. On this occasion, it was repainted in its original cream and red livery. It continued to operate in this style on the Joban Line after the exhibition ended. It was later repainted burgundy again, and in 1961, it was purchased by the Japanese National Railways (JNR) and officially registered. It continued to operate on the Joban Line, but with the progress of electrification it was transferred to the Akita Locomotive Depot in 1964. However, it saw little notable activity and was later taken out of service, eventually being scrapped in 1971, ending its short life.
