information
The DF40 is a diesel-electric locomotive, of which one was manufactured jointly by Kawasaki Rolling Stock and Kawasaki Heavy Industries in December 1955. It features a rounded body with two horizontal windows on the front and five round windows lined up on the side. Its paint job was a unique light blue with a yellow stripe. The engine was manufactured by the German company MAN, and became the basis for the later DF50-500 series. After undergoing various tests, it entered service in November 1956, at which point its paint job was changed to black with a yellow stripe. In October 1961, it was renamed DF91, and underwent two paint changes (from gray/vermilion with Kintaro paint on the front to gray/vermilion with a white stripe), and in 1965 it underwent a front modification to allow for easier passage for crew members when coupled with a DF50. It remained in service until it was retired in February 1975 due to its age.
