● The E231 series, which is active on the Joban Line, was introduced in 2002 as a replacement for the 103 series. It is available in 10-car and 5-car configurations, and is the longest 15-car configuration for an E231 series commuter train. In addition to the line color blue-green stripe, a greenish-brown stripe has been added to prevent passengers from boarding the wrong train on the local line. Along with the medium-distance E531 series, it is active on the Joban Rapid Line between Ueno and Toride and on the Narita Line between Abiko and Narita. After the opening of the Ueno-Tokyo Line in 2015, it has expanded its scope of activity and is now operating all the way to Shinagawa.
