Information
The ES44AC is the successor to the AC4400CW, equipped with an AC motor and boasting an output of 4,400 horsepower. The "ES" in ES44AC stands for "Evolution Series," a series of diesel-electric locomotives developed by GE Transportation Systems. To comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Tier 2 rail vehicle emissions regulations, the locomotive was developed over a six-year period at a cost of $250 million, with the first production model manufactured in 2003. The traction motor can be either DC or AC, depending on the rail operator's requirements. The locomotive is equipped with a GEVO 12-cylinder engine, which rivals the output of the FDL 16-cylinder engine that was the mainstream in previous GE locomotives, while also reducing fuel consumption and environmental pollution.
