information
In the early 1990s, JR Hokkaido faced the need to counter increasing competition from other routes, such as the extension of expressways and the popularization of air travel. The Kiha 281 series was a new generation of limited express diesel railcars developed in 1992 as a trump card for shortening travel times on the lucrative Hakodate-Sapporo route. The Kiha 281 series was a key element. Based on JR Shikoku's 2000 series, the Kiha 281 series boasted a pendulum system and two high-powered 355 horsepower engines per car, enabling the train to maintain high speeds even on curved sections, reaching a maximum speed of 130 km/h. Three prototype cars and 24 production cars were manufactured, and the Super Hokuto limited express began operating in 1994. This train covered the same section in 2 hours and 59 minutes, 30 minutes faster than the previous model, beating out many other limited express trains nationwide and claiming the title of Japan's fastest scheduled speed. At the time of its launch, the Kiha 281 lead car featured a "HEAT281" logo painted beneath the driver's cab, adding a special touch. Since then, the windows have been reinforced with polycarbonate panels, the logo has been changed, and the direction signs have been converted to LED, but it has continued to carry out the important role of connecting Hakodate and Sapporo. Due to aging, it was retired in 2022, and Kiha 281-901 is preserved at Naebo Works.
