The EF81 450 series locomotives were introduced in 1991 to increase the number of freight trains passing through the Kanmon Tunnel.
Nos. 453 to 455 use the same body structure as the 500 series, and have been redesigned to have the same light arrangement as the previous models.
The body paint scheme is the same as the 500 series, with the addition of a blue stripe on the bottom of the car.
