●The 221 series is a DC commuter train for the Tokaido Main Line "Special Rapid Service" that was introduced in 1989, and was the first train to be newly designed and manufactured by JR West. It is currently in service in a wide range of areas, from the Kansai Main Line (Yamatoji Line) to the Osaka Loop Line, Nara Line, San'in Main Line (Sagano Line), Kusatsu Line, and Kosei Line. Since 2013, the train has undergone structural improvement work (renewal), with the addition of a front-end fall prevention barrier and HID headlights combined with fog lights.

By adopting a newly developed slotless motor, it demonstrates smoother and quieter running performance than existing motors.
