The 223-1000 series is a JR West commuter train that was introduced in 1995 and was assigned to the Special Rapid service as part of the recovery efforts following the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.
The leading car continues the 221 series' streamlined front end with large curved glass, and has a top speed of 130km/h to accommodate the faster Special Rapid service.
Since its introduction, it has been in service on the Tokaido Main Line and Sanyo Main Line, and in later years the lower part of the leading car's skirt was extended.
