The Komu1 type was introduced in 1968 as a modified Tom50000 type for container transport on branch lines within Hokkaido, and was retired by 1977.
In 1970, JNR manufactured new 20ft class containers to coincide with the start of the Sanyo Liner container train between Nishiokayama and Sumida River, but the increase in containers of this size was taken over by the privately owned UC5 type.
