JR Kiha 48 Resort Shirakami(Kumagera)
4 Cars Set
information
Resort Shirakami is a panoramic diesel car that was introduced in 1997 by modifying Kiha 48 in response to the opening of the Akita Shinkansen. Initially, it was operated with a single blue 4-car train, but in 2002, a second train (a 3-car green-based "Buna" train) was added to coincide with the opening of the Hachinohe extension of the Tohoku Shinkansen, and the first train was given the nickname "Aoike". In 2006, the third train, "Kumagera", was added by combining the two additional modified cars with one car removed from the "Aoike". The Kumagera train is painted white with black around the windows and orange stripes, and has a gradation treatment on the front end, giving it a warm appearance. In 2011, a modified Kiha 48-1503 was coupled to make it a 4-car train. As of 2024, the "Aoike" and "Buna" formations have been replaced by the successor HB-E300 series, and only the "Kumagera" formation continues to use the Kiha 48 series.
