These trains were introduced in 1992 in preparation for the opening of the Airport Line between Hakata Station and Fukuoka Airport Station in March 1993. The train numbers are consecutive to the 1000N series, and a total of six trains, 19 to 24, are 2000 series vehicles. Partially refurbished in 2015, the trains were refurbished again in 2021 and are now in operation as 2000N series trains. They are in service on the Airport Line, Hakozaki Line, and JR Kyushu Chikuhi Line.
