JR Shikoku 8000 Series Limited Express Ishizuchi
5 Cars Set

information
The JR Shikoku 8000 series, whose prototype appeared in 1992 and mass-produced model appeared the following year, is mainly used on the "Shiokaze" limited express train between Okayama and Matsuyama, and the "Ishizuchi" limited express train between Takamatsu and Matsuyama. The body is made of lightweight stainless steel, and there are streamlined non-through leading cars and gabled through leading cars because "Shiokaze" and "Ishizuchi" need to be split and merged along the way. A controlled pendulum system is adopted to pass through curves at high speed, and the center of gravity is thoroughly lowered by installing air conditioners under the floor. Another major feature is that the pantograph is installed on a base connected to the bogie by a wire, preventing it from coming off the track when the car body is tilted. Six 5-car and six 3-car trains were manufactured. Renovation work on the interior and exterior began in 2004, with the replacement of seats in the Green Car and Reserved Seat Cars, the installation of smoking rooms (discontinued in 2011), and the complete Western-style toilets. In addition, the exterior was redesigned with a novel and easy-to-identify design in which the area around the passenger doors of each car was decorated with vertical slits in different colors based on the seat reservation classification, and the train received the Good Design Award in 2005. In 2010, the pantograph of the 8500 series was removed to accommodate the shortening of the three-car formation. In 2014, the direction of the entire formation was changed to unify the position of the Green Car with the 2000 series diesel railcars, and the 8000 series (half-room Green Car) has been the No. 1 car again for the first time since 1998. In 2018, one three-car formation was retired. The second renovation will begin in 2023, and the 8000 series trains, which have been the face of Okayama and Shikoku for over 30 years, are entering a new era of change, and future developments are attracting attention.
