Information
The Kiha 40 series is a general-purpose diesel car developed by the Japanese National Railways and introduced in 1977.
The Kiha 40 series 1700 is a model that has been further extended in life compared to the 700 series, which is a one-man version of the 100 series for extremely cold regions.
As of September 2024, they are deployed in Hakodate, Tomakomai, Asahikawa, and Naebo, and are in service on the Hakodate Main Line, Muroran Main Line, Hidaka Line, Nemuro Main Line, and Sekihoku Main Line.
The cars belonging to the Hakodate Transport Office and Tomakomai Depot are characterized by the fact that many of them still have typhoons and jumper plug preparation sections buried in the front.
The Kiha 40 series has supported transportation in Hokkaido for 48 years since its introduction in 1977, but is scheduled to be retired from regular service in March 2025.
