Information
The 489 series was introduced in 1971 as a train based on the 485 series, modified to run between Yokokawa and Karuizawa on the Shinetsu Main Line.
The 489 series, which was used on the Hakusan Limited Express from 1988, was renovated, with the exterior design changed to oyster white with rose, light ultramarine, and light cobalt blue.
In addition to the Hakusan Limited Express, it was also used on the Asama Limited Express at intervals, and from 1993 it replaced the 14 series used on the Noto Express and was also used on that train.
The leading car of the Kanazawa Depot H03 train, Kuha 489 No. 3, had no cover over the headlight above the driver's cab, giving it a distinctive appearance.
With the timetable change in October 1997, the Usui Pass and Hakusan express services were discontinued and the number of trains was reduced, so the former H03 train number was changed to H02, and it was used on the Noto express and the additional Hakutaka and Raicho express services.
From late 2000, the Hakusan-colored 489 series began to be restored to JNR express colors, and the H02 train (formerly the H03 train) was the last train in that color, and it was in service in this color until around June 2002.
