JR MCR600 type for snow removal (West Japan)
Information
Since the 1990s, JR companies have introduced track motor cars such as the MCR600 for snow removal work on tracks. Work that was previously done by locomotives is now done by motor cars treated as work machines, which allows for more flexible work in terms of personnel availability, and has made work faster and more efficient. The MCR600 has a variety of special equipment, including a russell rotary function used for regular snow removal work, a color monitor for monitoring, and a remote-controlled automatic direction change device. It can also be used as a regular track maintenance motor car by removing the snow removal equipment. The MCR600 comes in a variety of colorful outfits depending on the owner company, completely changing the image of work machines, which were all yellow during the JNR era. In recent years, more and more of these machines have been retired, but these work machines, including their successor models, continue to support safe railway operations behind the scenes, regardless of the season.
