Information
Sanriku Railway was established in 1981 as Japan's first third-sector railway company. The North-Rias Line and South-Rias Line sections, which opened on April 1, 1984, will celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2024.

In conjunction with this, a logo commemorating the 40th anniversary of opening is displayed on the side of some of the trains.

The section of the JR Yamada Line from Kamaishi to Miyako, which was damaged in the Great East Japan Earthquake, was transferred to Sanriku Railway in 2019.

Currently, the new "Rias Line" is operated together with the previous "North-Rias Line" and "South-Rias Line", and is the longest operating line length of any third-sector railway company in Japan.

The 36 series was introduced when Sanriku Railway opened in 1984, and has undergone engine renewal and air conditioning conversion, with a total of eight cars still in service as of 2024.
