Information
Unlike passenger cars used in train formations from the 20-series sleeper onwards, passenger cars used as individual cars from the past are commonly known as old-style passenger cars, and many were scrapped by the end of the JNR era, but some were taken over by JR and private railways for events.
The old-style passenger cars at Gunma Rolling Stock Center have been renovated to make the doors remotely lockable, and in 2022, SuhaFu 42 2173 will be converted into a lounge car, SuhaFu 42 2234 will be painted blue, and the interior will be changed to a wood grain pattern except for SuhaFu 32 and Ohani 36.
Currently, they are mainly used for special trains in the JR East area, and sometimes run on other private railways.
