The ED75-700 series appeared in 1971, and was fitted with salt damage prevention measures in consideration of its use on the Japan Sea side, such as the Ou Main Line and Uetsu Main Line.
Most of the vehicles inherited by JR East at the time of privatization have already been retired due to the abolition of passenger trains.
ED75-700 series locomotives have remained at Akita Rolling Stock Center since the 2000s, and in addition to construction and special trains, they also pulled some freight trains until 2008.
