The 209-500 series is an electric train that first appeared on the Keiyo Line in 1998.
Four sets were transferred to the Keiyo Line in 2008 from the Keihin-Tohoku and Negishi Lines to replace the 201 Series.
After the introduction of the E233-5000 series, three sets were diverted to the Musashino Line, leaving one spare set.
The only 209-500 series that remained on the Keiyo Line has since undergone renovations to its major equipment, and is now in operation together with the E233-5000 series, and is in service on the Keiyo Line as well as the Sotobo Line and Uchibo Line.
