The EF81 type appeared in 1968 as an electric locomotive compatible with both DC and 50/60Hz AC, and is still in use as the standard for AC/DC locomotives.
Four of the 300-series locomotives appeared with stainless steel bodies as locomotives for the Kanmon Tunnel, and currently, No. 303 is in use within Kyushu with its unpainted stainless steel body.
