The EF81 type appeared in 1968 as an electric locomotive compatible with both DC and 50/60Hz AC, and remains the standard for AC/DC locomotives.
Four of the 300-series locomotives appeared with stainless steel bodies as locomotives for the Kanmon Tunnel, and the 303 is still in service within Kyushu today, retaining its unpainted stainless steel bodywork.
