Information
The 400 series was introduced in 1990 as a train for the Yamagata Shinkansen.
The Yamagata Shinkansen operates through Shinkansen and conventional lines, so the 400 series has a shorter car length and smaller cross-section than conventional Shinkansen trains.
When running on the Tohoku Shinkansen section, the 411 series was equipped with a retractable coupler at the front to couple with Shinkansen trains such as the 200 series.
When it was introduced, it was a 6-car train, but in 1995, the 429 series was added to increase transportation capacity, making it a 7-car train.
From around 1999, the paintwork was gradually changed to match the E3 series 1000 series that was introduced with the extension to Shinjo, and the original paintwork disappeared in 2001.
