The 209-1000 series was introduced in 1999 to increase the number of local trains on the Joban Line.
The body is based on the 209-500 series, but is characterized by a change in the front mask with the installation of emergency doors to accommodate direct subway connections, and the adoption of a straight body like the 0 series.
With the introduction of the E233 series Green Cars on the Chuo Line, they began commercial operation in 2019 to secure spare cars for modification.
As the specifications of this car are significantly different from the E233 series, it is mainly used only on the Chuo Line (between Tokyo and Takao).
