The 781 series was mainly used for express trains between Sapporo and Asahikawa on the Hakodate Main Line, but in order to compete with the increased speed of express buses following the completion of the Do-o Expressway, the September 1990 timetable revision saw a significant increase in the number of trains and an increase in the maximum speed of some trains to 130km/h. The 785 series "Super White Arrow" was introduced at that time. It has a lightweight stainless steel body and the first VVVF inverter control for AC trains. It consists of four basic cars and two additional cars, and the front section is a through type to enable detailed operation. After that, in 2002, the number of reserved seats "u-seat cars" Moha 784/785-500 was added and the train was reorganized into a five-car formation. Renovation work was carried out in 2005, and the appearance has changed. The number has decreased due to the addition of the successor 789 series, but some cars are still in active service as of 2024.
