The HC85 series is a hybrid vehicle that was announced in 2019 as a replacement for the "Hida" and "Nanki" limited express trains operated by the Kiha 85 series, and has begun test runs.
The series employs a hybrid system that runs by driving the motor with electricity generated by the engine and stored in a storage battery, reducing the environmental impact.
Mass-produced vehicles will be released in 2022, and will begin commercial operation as the "Hida" limited express in July 2022 and the "Nanki" limited express in July 2023.
Like the Kiha 85 series, which ended regular service on the "Hida" in March 2023 and the "Nanki" in June 2023, the series will be flexibly configured to suit operations, from a minimum of two cars to a maximum of 10 cars.
