This new series of container freight cars is perfectly suited to currently active locomotives, including the DC electric locomotives EF200, EF210, and EH200, the AC/DC electric locomotives EF510 and EH500, and the JNR-type EF65 and EF81.

1,162 KoKi 106 cars were manufactured between 1997 and 2007. Its main feature is that it is a general-purpose container freight car that can handle not only standard 12ft containers, but also non-standard sizes such as marine containers and tank containers.
KoKi 107 was completed as an improved version of KoKi 106, and is characterized by its brake system changed to the unit brake system similar to KoKi 200, and the hand brake located in the deck handrail. The frame is painted the same gray as KoKi 106.
It is mainly used for high-speed freight on main lines, and operates at a maximum speed of 100 km/h when the train weight is 1,300 t (26-car train), and 110 km/h when the train weight is 1,200 t or less (24-car train).

It can carry a variety of containers, from standard 12 ft containers to marine containers and tank containers. It is mainly used for high-speed freight on main lines, and continues to be widely used on the Tokaido-Sanyo Main Line, Tohoku Main Line to Hokkaido, and the Japan Sea Longitudinal Line.
